Historical and Art Collections

The Historical and Art Collection Department is responsible for the preservation, research and enlargement of the University’s art treasure which currently contains more than 1,000 works of art and collectors’ items.

The art collection contains renowned monuments, sculptures, art installations, paintings, drawings and pieces of graphic art of the 19th to 21st centuries, and the University insignia, medals and plaques.

The collection focus is on works of art which are related to the University:

The artworks’ preservation is the prerequisite for their survival and opening up to the public. Hence the Historical and Art Collection Department entrusts continuously professional art restorers with works of art restoration.

Loan collections for exhibitions

The University’s artworks are in high demand at exhibitions of all kinds but mainly for those on the history of science. Additionally, several pieces are permanently lent to museums. Hence for several years one of the University sceptres has been on loan at the Historical Museum in Erfurt and two altarpieces are shown at ‘Märkisches Museum–Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin’.

Loans for prestigious spaces

The Historical and Art Collection Department provides their own works of art to prestigious rooms of the University.

Every year the art collection is permanently enlarged by new acquisitions.

Kleine Humboldt Galerie

The gallery ‘Kleine Humboldt Galerie’ with its 30-year history holds regularly exhibitions, which are curated by students of the University and the Historical and Art Collection Department.
