Restricted restart of library services

Restricted use of working places from 01.07.2020

After several weeks of closure to protect against the spread of COVID-19, the reading rooms of the University Library will be gradually reopened from 01.07.2020 and some of the working places will be made available. The open stacks will also be partially accessible again.

The basis for this is the current regulation of the Berlin Senate, according to which academic libraries may be opened to the public.

Please note: Only HU members are allowed to work on site.

Charité members who are not yet registered with the HU University Library are asked to contact gz-ausleihe@ub.hu-berlin.de.

In the research reading room at Grimm-Zentrum, non-HU members are admitted in exceptional cases.

In order to comply with the necessary hygiene measures and minimum distances, unfortunately only a limited number of working places are available.

The opening of the reading rooms is realized differently at the individual library locations depending on the structural and organizational situation. At some locations, on-site work is possible by reservation only; in addition, a place card handed out by the service staff is required.

We ask for your understanding that, depending on the situation, we may have to adapt the regulations at short notice. Please check our website again shortly before your visit.

Assignment of the limited working places

Grimm-Zentrum

At Grimm-Zentrum, working places are assigned without reservation, i.e. users receive a working place in the order of their arrival. We ask for your understanding that only a limited number of working places are available.

Place cards are handed out at the service desk in the foyer and can be returned inside (ground floor, left of the entrance).

Some of the working places on floors 1-7 are allocated for the following times of use:

09:00 - 12:00 h and 14:00 - 17:00 h.

Please note: Place cards are handed out until max. 1 hour before the end of the respective time of use. Beyond that, a working place can only be used in one of the two time windows mentioned above per day.

Between 13:00 - 14:00 h the working places are cleaned and all users are asked to leave the reading room or the inner area.

The opening of the study carrels for HU exam candidates is also in preparation. Those exam candidates who were affected by the closure of the University Library in March will be notified that they can now use the facilities again. Information on the next application phase can be found here.

Note on the cloakrooms: With regard to the minimum distances, only the cloakroom on the ground floor can be used in Grimm-Zentrum at present; access to the lockers in the basement is blocked.

In the research reading room, the use of historical collections, rare and special materials is possible by prior reservation. More detailed information can be found on the Research Reading Room website.

Stay in the buildings and rules of conduct

Please note:

  • If you have symptoms of a cold (e.g. fever or cough), you are not allowed to enter the University Library.

  • Also observe the rules of distance in front of the building and at the library entrance.

  • Working in the reading rooms is only possible with a place card booked on your user account or an exception. Please place the place card on the desk so that it is clearly visible; it serves as proof of authorization.
  • Only take the place you have been assigned, otherwise it would be considerably more difficult to organize the cleaning. It is forbidden to change places.
  • Please clear your working place and leave the building quickly when your work on site is finished.
  • Hand in your place card at the service desk at the end of your visit so that your user account is cleared.
  • The working places are made available for the purpose of individual study. Group work, meetings, and exchange of information are currently not possible. Conversations are to be avoided.
  • Passing on the place card to other persons is not permitted and may result in exclusion from use.
  • If possible, use your own mobile devices for your research.
  • Wearing a face mask is mandatory in the buildings of the University Library. You can only take off the face mask at your working place.
  • Observe the general hygiene and behavioral recommendations for protection against the corona virus: Keep a minimum distance from other people, wash your hands regularly and observe the usual sneezing and coughing etiquette.
  • The instructions of the library and security staff must be followed.

The rules of conduct serve your safety and the safety of our employees and other users - thank you for your understanding!

Restricted loan service

Since May we have been gradually offering the borrowing and return of literature again.

Please note: Only HU members can borrow media.

Charité members who are not yet registered with the HU University Library are asked to contact gz-ausleihe@ub.hu-berlin.de.

Non-HU members cannot borrow media, but they can return them at the locations Campus Nord Branch Library, Science Branch Library and Grimm-Zentrum.

Since the individual library locations are structurally and organizationally different, there are also differences in the restricted lending operations.

Details of the services at the respective locations can be found in the overview tables and our FAQ.

Please note:

If you visit the University Library to borrow or return media, we ask you to observe the obligatory rules of distance and conduct. If you have symptoms of a cold (e.g. fever or cough), you are not allowed to enter the University Library. Wearing a face mask in the buildings is mandatory. You can only take off the face mask at a working place assigned to you.

Furthermore, only a limited number of users can be admitted to all locations of the University Library at the same time.

This is for the safety of you, our employees and other users - thank you for your understanding!

Prepare your visit

If you are only visiting the University Library to borrow media, we kindly ask you to prepare your visit well and, if possible, to research the desired media in Primus already at home.

This way you will not spend unnecessary time in the library areas and help to avoid queues and minimize the risk of infection.

Loan periods/Late fees

We have automatically extended loan periods. This was not possible in all cases, e.g. when the validity of the card expired or the medium was reserved. We ask you to return the media whose loan period has already expired now.
New late fees for expired loan periods have not arisen since 13.03.2020 and will not arise for the time being (until the end of July).
