Registration, user card and user account

The University Library is a public scientific library. In accordance with our user regulations (German only), registration is open to all over the age of 16 with a proof of residence in Germany.

Registration and Account

HU students

Normally, there is no need for you to register. Your signed enrolment card also serves as your library user card. The Admissions Office will forward your address details to us at the beginning of the semester. However, you should still bring your personal ID card or passport plus proof of residence with you on your first library visit in case we do not have your current information.

To get access to all electronic resources licensed by the library, please log in with your HU account on the public computers or, with your mobile devices, to the HU net. Should you forget your password, you can use the CMS password reset form.

At the self-issue machines please log in with your library user card number (HUHS barcode on your enrolment card) and a 4-digit PIN. You can create this PIN yourself online via your Primus user account ("My Profile" > "Settings" > "Edit Details" > "Change PIN / Password"). Just click on the "Log in" box at the upper left corner and log in with your HU account.

HU staff

As a member of HU staff, you first need to activate your library user account via an "Opt-In form" (German only). This only works within the HU net.

Please also fill in a registration card at one of our service desks and present this together with your ID card or passport with proof of residence. In case you are not registered in the central address file of HU (ZIS), please provide your working contract. You will then receive your orange library user card.

At the self-issue machines you can log in with your library account number and a 4-digit PIN. You can create this PIN yourself online via your Primus user account ("My Profile" > "Settings" > "Edit Details" > "Change PIN / Password"). You can click on the "Log in" box at the upper left corner and log in with your university account.

To get access to all electronic resources licensed by the library, please log in with your HU account on the public computers or, with your mobile devices, to the HU net. Should you forget your password, you will need to contact the Computer and Media Service directly.

Non-HU members

Please bring your personal ID card or passport plus residency certificate with you to register at one of the service desks. Within a few minutes you will receive your user card which is valid for a year. The library card and use of the university library are free of charge. Please use the online form provided to register in advance. If you want to use our online services (ordering, reservation, etc) directly after filling out the online form, please note down the provisional identification code which appears after submitting the form.

In order to use your University Library account to access our online services, you will have to change the password of your online user account.  You need to click on the "Log in" box at the upper left corner and log in with your account number and current password. There, you can change your password by clicking on "My Profile" > "Settings" > "Edit Details" > "Change PIN / Password". Here you can also set a 4-digit PIN, which you will need for the self-issue machines.

Should you ever forget your password, please contact the library services.

Minors

You can register at the library from the age of 16 onwards. However, parents of minors have to provide a declaration of consent. Please use the following form (PDF with form function / plain PDF, both in German only) and bring it with you when you register, as well as your ID card or passport plus proof of residence.

Special User Group

If you are a university lecturer at HU or a member of Wista (Berlin-Adlershof), please let us know when registering and provide proof in the form of relevant documentation.

Further Information

Registration and cloakroom

You can register at all locations during their respective service hours. In the Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum these are Monday to Friday 09:00-19:00 h and Saturday 10:00-17:30 h.

The cloakroom in the basement is available for use with your own padlock (diameter 5-6 mm). There are also lockers on the ground floor (foyer) which can only be locked using a cafeteria card.

Validity (duration of membership)

The library card of HU-members is automatically valid for the entire duration of membership. The library user cards of all other groups are generally valid for a year only. The period of validity can be extended in person at one of the branch libraries by presenting your user card and identification.

Change of address

It is in your own interest to inform the lending desk immediately of any changes to your address. Failure to do so may result in unwelcome delays to reminders or warning letters, and potentially mean that we have to submit an address enquiry to the residents’ registration office.

HU students can change their address via their AGNES account or let the enrolment office know informally. HU staff need to contact the Personnel Division. Non-HU members need to register their new adress in person at a service desk.

Loss of user card

It is in your own interest to inform the lending desk immediately if you have lost your library card.
A replacement card will be issued upon request and the payment of a fee (€ 5,00).
