Subject Holdings

In the Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum, books and periodicals from the former Branch Library in Social Sciences have been joined with the holdings from the former Central University Library.

Monographs and periodicals dealing with Cultural Studies are shelved systematically according to the Regensburg Classification Scheme (RVK). Since there is no specific classification group designated for the field of Cultural Studies in the RVK system, other suitable subject areas have to be utilised, e.g. Media and Communication Studies / Communication Design (call numbers starting with the letter combination AP), Philosophy (CA-CK), Ethnology (LA-LC) or Social Sciences (MN-MS). They can be found at the following locations:

Textbook collection (EG, Area A): The collection contains multiple copies of basic introductory works and textbooks. These books can be borrowed by students of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Magazine Rack (1. OG): Unbound current journal issues are being displayed here. Journals can generally not be borrowed, but many of them are available online.

Bound journals (2. OG): Here you can find the bound journal volumes from previous years. Journals can generally not be borrowed. Partly, journals are available online as well; in fact, many of them are accessible online only.

Please note as one of the major periodicals in Cultural Studies (in printed form):

Ilinx: Berliner Beiträge zur Kulturwissenschaft. - Call number: AZ 16600

Books (2.-7. OG): The book stock contains monographs, collective volumes and bibliographies. These are mostly shelved thematically according to the Regensburg Classification Scheme (RVK). An overview of that classification system and its particular subdivisions can be found at the website of the Regensburg Classification Scheme.

Provided the books are not marked differently (for example with a yellow non-lending label), they are available for issue.

Historical and Scientific Special Collections (6. OG, Research Reading Room): Certain rare and very old works are given out in the Research Reading Room only. At this site, even books and manuscripts from the papers of the late philosopher and cultural scientist Wolfgang Heise can be consulted. All works presented here are not borrowable.

Older literature from the so-called Numerus currens stock needing special protection must frequently be ordered from the closed stacks and can, in part, only be consulted in the Research Reading Room.
