Example of how authors and their affiliations are commonly given in a research article

In their publications, scientists usually provide information on their affiliation to at least one academic institution or research organisation. This relationship between an author and an institution is of great importance, for example for monitoring publication output of individuals and institutions as well as for billing of publication-based charges. Furthermore, the affiliation is required to be not only comprehensible and evaluable for individuals but also for computers. The information on the instutition therefore needs to be consistent and standardised.

It is thus important that members of Humboldt-Universität provide correct affiliation details and state their affiliation to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in a predefined standardised format. For this reason, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin issued affiliation guidelines which specify a consistent format for stating the affiliation to Humboldt-Universität, while allowing a certain degree of flexibility.
